HEALTH EDUCATION

(Please see below for class updates)

Welcome to Health Class!

By definition, health is the sum of your physical, mental, and social well-being. This semester we will be looking at various health topics related to you and those around you. We will be having open discussions about all aspects related to health. Please remember that health education class is a place for you to bring questions, comments, or concerns that you might have related to health. It is a safe environment and free from ridicule. Personal attacks and offensive statements will not be tolerated.

Course Description:
This class includes instruction in nutrition, sex education, and drug education. The nutrition portion is taught strictly by the text. The sex education portion is taught strictly by the CPSB curriculum. The drug education portion is taught with CBSP materials, books, pamphlets, films, agencies and supplementary teaching suggestions.

Please note that the Caddo Parish sex education curriculum is strictly abstinence based.  If you do not wish your child to be taught the sex education portion of this program, you must sign and return the Caddo Parish Form that was sent home the first week of school. Students not taking this portion of the program will be assigned other health relatied lessons and asked to go to the library to complete that information.  Sex education is a six-week long course.

Class Objective:
o To promote physical, mental, and social wellness, health literacy, and positive health behavior in students.

Class Goals:
o To provide students with the necessary skills and materials in order to make positive decisions regarding their health choices and lifestyles;
o To encourage students to participate in various health-related activities during the semester; and
o To provide students with health knowledge so that they may evaluate their own health.

Class Materials:
1. Meeks, Linda & Phillip Heit. (2003). Health and Wellness. Woodland Hills: Glencoe/McGraw-Hill.
2. I would like you to have an extra notebook that will be used specifically for Friday journaling. Periodically I will pick up your journals and grade them.

Late Work:
Students are permitted to make up homework if an absence is excused.

Tardies:
Students must be ready for roll check when the tardy bell rings. Tardiness to class will not be tolerated. After two tardies to class, the student will be notified in writing or through a phone call. Additionally, no student may leave the area until the bell sounds releasing the class.
